Nursing in General Practice

The Program provides mentoring as a valuable means of enhancing the recruitment and retention of nursing staff in General Practice, by encouraging nurturing of newly employed nurses,  upskilling of existing practice nurses to enhance more favorable work place cultures.

Three Practice Nurses have been trained to provide Mentoring/coaching support for Practices wishing to employ a nurse and newly appointed practice nurses.

Support/coaching may include:
  • Preparing the practice to employ a PN,
  •  Supporting the employment process - recruiting, interviewing, development of position description (role), advertising etc
  • Mentoring/Coaching post-employment including orientation, role definition & coaching for a period of time.
This support/coaching may include developing the nurse’s role in:
  • Data Management – ensure and maintain an up to date diabetes register, for PIP recall/reminder system
  • Enhanced Primary Care – Aged Health Assessments, GPMP and TCA
  • Chronic Disease Management - Diabetes Annual Cycle of Care, Asthma 3+ Plan
  • Clinical Nurse Support tailored to individual needs in triage immunisation wound management general practice accreditation health assessments case conferencing chronic disease management
  • Time management, streamlining patients through the practice
  • Preparation for accreditation for practices that would like to be accredited
